New York rain. Romance on Doyers Street. Chinatown.Stolen moments are the sweetest moments. When the rest of the city has escaped for the day, the world melts away with a lingering kiss under an umbrella.
—-It’s really no secret that Doyers Street is one of my favorite streets in lower Manhattan. It’s an alley (or very narrow street) that is usually photographed from an entirely different angle. In fact, the fact that it has a sharp angle in it goes along with its colorful history. Its angle was known as “the Bloody Angle” for part of the 20th century due to gang violence. This is just around the bend from the more popular part of the angle and also across from one of my favorite noodle shops in Chinatown. I love moments like this that are so completely candid but somehow feel cinematic. I had just walked out from the above-mentioned noodle shop when I was met with this scene. It was too perfect to not quickly capture, of course. To all who celebrate Valentine’s Day and to all who do not celebrate - I wish you romantic moments like this one. ♥—-Taken with the Sony A55.

Rainy day. Greenwich Village, New York City.

Every drop of rain paints the city with an otherworldly light: tiny illuminated universes cast their glow onto the city with every luminous splatter.

Wet earth in the form of darkened concrete springs forth new life in the form of urban wanderers who migrate quickly from one patch of earth to another as their wet reflections echo their movements.

And after the day has unleashed its deluge of light, the city soaks in the infused-afterglow.

Rain in Greenwich Village, New York City.

In dreams memories take on the hues of nostalgia: faded hues made rich with meaning that are etched into the dreamscapes that play themselves against our eyelids each night.

Memory-tones diffused by the tear-in-the eye and lump-in-the throat feeling of familiarity synthesize with overwhelming feelings of connection with the past as it dilutes itself into the present.

Chinatown in the rain. New York City.

There is nothing like a rainy evening in New York City. The streets, darkened by the rainfall take on a beautiful sheen against the glistening walls and storefronts. Couples huddle under shared umbrellas and inviting scents of dinner fill the streets.

It’s been exceptionally rainy in New York City for the past week or so. It’s as if the city is quenching its thirst after the long hot marathon that was the summer. I am hoping that eventually this rain will stop and give way to beautiful autumn weather. But in the meantime, it is admittedly hard not to love the sheer romance of a rainy evening in New York City.

This is one of my favorite spots on rainy evenings like the one in this photo. It’s here where my favorite hand-pulled noodle restaurant resides just round the bend (aptly called Tasty Hand-Pulled Noodles). After drying off and sipping hot jasmine tea, some of the most comforting and inviting food in Chinatown arrives at the table while the rain-drenched streets wait patiently outside.

Rain. Chinatown, New York City.

In the space between day and night, rain has a transformative effect on the city. Streets glisten in anticipation of nightfall while street lights cast benevolent halos on empty sidewalks and under the shelter of an umbrella lovers embrace.

A Kiss in the Rain. Lovers under an umbrella outside of Central Park. Upper East Side, New York City.

I used to shy away from capturing people in my photos of New York City until very recently. I think the turning point occurred around the time that took this photo. I had just started to take photos of events and parades (you can view some of my parade photography here) in order to test my chops with regards to capturing movement. As someone who primarily deals with landscapes and cityscapes, the world of street photography is foreign to me but I suppose that is what makes it so exciting. You can’t learn and grow if you never step outside of your comfort zone.

A park bench outside of Central Park during a mild rain storm this past week…

Central Park, Manhattan.

Central Park in a snowstorm is a peaceful place. On the day I took this photo the park was empty with the exception of die-hard snow lovers, photographers, a few people who were visiting New York City and were trying to make the best of their trip despite the weather and random people trying to experience the beauty of a storm in one of the most beautiful places in New York City.

The Mall is the only straight line that can be found in all of Central Park. The elm trees form a cathedral-like canopy above the path. The elms that line the pathway are some of the largest and last remaining elms to be found in North America.

A man was standing in the center of the path with a colorful umbrella. I barely even noticed him there at first since the wind was so rough and my eyes were tearing. In the process of cleaning my viewfinder and lens, I glanced up and noticed him. He stood fixed in the same position for what seemed like an eternity. I suppose he was just taking it all like everyone else. I will never know.
