New York City at night. St.Mark’s Place. East Village.

When the days concede to night in the winter, there is a certain comfort in the glow of neon city lights.

This particular view is of St. Mark’s Place in the East Village. The giant cow on the right belongs to the restaurant Mark (“We grind our own beef”) and the colorful neon signs belong to Andromeda - a tattoo and piercing establishment that merged with the West Village’s Cassioppia a few years back.

The sign that is partially concealed on the left under the tree branches (with shoes hanging off of them!) is Rockit Scientist Records which was a great records store that dated back to the mid 1990s when the East Village was home to far more records stores and had a more eclectic vibe.

There is a coldness to neon that is eclipsed by a peculiar sort of warmth when the windchill dips into the single digits. It’s a sign of life. People tend to huddle under the glow of the lights in the winter with a frequency that isn’t seen as much in warmer months as if they are city moths drawn to the glowing promise of warmth.

Since people have asked, I am going to include the camera/lens combos I used for each photo on this blog from this point on (or at least I will try!). This was taken with the Sony a99 and my 35mm lens.

St. Mark’s Place brownstone covered in lush ivy. East Village, New York City.

Before the leaves begin their gravity-fettered migration to the ground, the sun engages in one last embrace with the foliage ensconced shadows.

In these sun-soaked shadows, the leaves shiver while dreaming of winter’s frigid kiss waltzing slowly with the ominous brisk breeze before they are swept off their branches like young lovers swept off their feet by the newness of each other.

St. Mark’s Place panoramic. East Village, New York City.

Headed out last night to give the new camera a spin. A ‘tiny walk around the neighborhood’ somehow resulted in a walk through the neighborhood followed by a walk over the Brooklyn Bridge into Brooklyn. :)

I mostly played around with some of the fun functions like the sweep panorama function. It allows you to shoot stitched panoramic images by holding down the shutter button while panning across a scene (at the perfect speed, this took some trial and error because at the wrong speed it clips a bit). The camera captures overlapping images and stitches them together.

I was pleasantly surprised by the results after quite a bit of trying to get the perfect timing for the panning down. I love that I was able to capture a bit of St. Mark’s Place at night using this!

You can see the full image on Flickr: St. Mark’s Panoramic.

The 5th Annual New York Dance Parade 2011. A collection of moments. St. Mark’s Place. East Village, New York City.

On Saturday May 21, 2011 over 10,000 dancers converged on the streets of New York City showcasing around 70 different forms of dance at the New York Dance Parade.

Dance parade is an annual parade and festival that showcases dance of all kinds as an expression of art and culture. As defined by its Board of Directors, Dance parade’s mission is “to promote dance as an expressive and unifying art form by showcasing all forms of dance, educating the general public about the opportunities to experience dance, and celebrating diversity of dance in New York City by sponsoring a yearly city-wide dance parade and dance festival”. New York Dance Parade. An intimate moment. East Village, New York City.

Reason #467896 that I love New York City: I went out to get a late breakfast at Odessa and after enjoying some mighty fine pancakes I stumbled onto the beginning of the 2011 New York Dance Parade on St. Mark’s Place. There were so many great moments but this is one of my favorites.

In a city of around 8 million people, sometimes everything and everyone else melts away.

The NY Times East Village Local section asked me to put together a photo-essay this past weekend focusing on the benefits of looking up. There are so many gorgeous architectural details that can be found above street level in the East Village. :)

My photo-essay for NearSay this week is about the multitude of mosaics that can be found all over the East Village. The article showcases a variety of these mosaics and the man who has been crafting them for the last few decades, Jim Power, fondly known as The Mosaic Man
