New York City - Times Square at Night in the Snow

—-

Under city lights,

every snowflake

falls like

little bits of hope

glistening

on the periphery

thought

as we revel

in a sea

of dreams

enveloped in the

boundlessness

of possibility.

New York City at Night in the Winter - Lower East Side

—-

The first draft of my New York City photography book is due a week from today. I have been immersed in the grueling process of not only finalizing the writing for the book but also picking the images that will ultimately go into the book. It’s been an interesting process since I have been sorting through images dating all the way back to the end of 2010 when I first started seriously pursuing photography.

This photograph was taken with my iPhone during the winter of 2012. This is a portion of the same part of Rivington Street that I photographed and published online in my last post to this blog. It’s interesting how two totally different nights produced two entirely different images of (roughly) the same location.

I remember that I took this photograph when I was at a turning point in terms of understanding where I wanted to go with my photography. When I look at this scene, I can feel the cathartic rush of emotions that washed over me while I stood on that street corner. It was so freeing to finally come to terms with my goal of pursing the loose quality of melding a host of influences and emotions into an image rather than capturing the sharp quality of reality .

And with that, I return to the cocoon of book creation where hopefully I will emerge in a week with a first draft that my editing team will enjoy sculpting into a finished product. :)

New York City - Snow at Night

—-

We wander through streets

dusted with

the scattered remnants

of the sky’s memories:

cloud debris

that cushions

the weight of hope

that bears down

on us

as we walk

with our faces turned

towards the city night’s stars

that lead our way

into the melted light

of dreams.

I have been going through my large collection of city snow photographs for a current client. What I love the most about snow at night is the timeless quality it imparts to the city. It’s the leveler of time in some respects.

And speaking of current projects, I am back in the thick of working on my New York City photography book after spending a few days in Las Vegas this week speaking at WPPI on all three days of the Expo on the Sony stage.

The experience was a whirlwind of activity and I came back on the red-eye flight to New York City earlier this morning feeling incredibly inspired and hopeful for some very, very, very exciting things that are now being planned thanks to some really wonderful encounters with people at WPPI (more on all of that as events unfold).

But most of all I am extremely grateful for the experience. Thank you to Sony for giving me this opportunity! And I also wanted to sincerely thank all of the super cool people who sat through my presentations and who connected with me afterwards or during the duration of the conference.

New York City - Snow - Central Park

It’s on days like this when the sun rests longer than usual and winter’s essence seeps through every crack and crevice that the earth quivers a ghost shiver that rests in summer’s memory.

I am currently in Las Vegas at a photography conference: WPPI. But I can’t resist daydreaming about New York City in the snow.

If you are at WPPI - I will be speaking twice a day at the Sony booth about using social media to boost your brand. The bonus? You have a chance to win a Sony a7 at any point when you watch any of the speakers (including me!) at the Sony booth. See you there!
