New York City at Night in the Winter - Lower East Side

—-

The first draft of my New York City photography book is due a week from today. I have been immersed in the grueling process of not only finalizing the writing for the book but also picking the images that will ultimately go into the book. It’s been an interesting process since I have been sorting through images dating all the way back to the end of 2010 when I first started seriously pursuing photography.

This photograph was taken with my iPhone during the winter of 2012. This is a portion of the same part of Rivington Street that I photographed and published online in my last post to this blog. It’s interesting how two totally different nights produced two entirely different images of (roughly) the same location.

I remember that I took this photograph when I was at a turning point in terms of understanding where I wanted to go with my photography. When I look at this scene, I can feel the cathartic rush of emotions that washed over me while I stood on that street corner. It was so freeing to finally come to terms with my goal of pursing the loose quality of melding a host of influences and emotions into an image rather than capturing the sharp quality of reality .

And with that, I return to the cocoon of book creation where hopefully I will emerge in a week with a first draft that my editing team will enjoy sculpting into a finished product. :)

New York City - Snow - Ludlow Street - Lower East Side
It’s moments like these
that the world
stops rotating
long enough
for every breath
to reverberate
alongside
the earth’s heartbeat.
And we move
through the city
relishing a chance
to be enveloped
by the sinking,
seductive
embrace
of serenity
as the city
dreams
along with
us.
——

This was taken while walking down Ludlow Street on the Lower East Side on a beautiful winter night with my Sony A99.

There is nothing like standing in the swirling snow while the ground disappears under a blanket of white. Everything that matters and everything that is insignificant just melts away.

New York City - Snow - Bryant Park

I created my first full photo-story (tons of photos!) on Exposure about snowy winter nights in New York City:

New York City - Winter Nights

It was fun to weave a series of narratives around many of the photos I have enjoyed taking during snowstorms here in NYC

I hope you enjoy it!

Let me know what you think!

New York City - Snow - Morton Street - West Village

There is nothing quite like

winter evenings

in the city

when the trees reach over

cars dusted

with confectioner’s sugar snow

and lights twinkle in windows

like eyes full of wonder.

—

This was taken on a recent winter afternoon in the West Village with my Sony QX100 just as evening was about to take over. The street is Morton Street which is home to some of the first land in New York City settled by the first wave of European immigrants. It’s one of my favorite streets to walk down in the snow especially when all of the lights start to come on for the night.
