Early Sunday morning on Orchard Street. Lower East Side. New York City.

On cold city mornings, birds pepper the bone-white sky with movement.

And through the haze left over by clouds caught in the scuffle between autumn and winter, the wind rushes through the streets like the ghosts of yesterday’s thoughts.

Clouds over 6th Avenue. Chelsea, New York City.

The clouds billow like smoke descending from the flames of the sun over the city in the afternoon.

The Trump World Tower in the sun. Midtown, New York City.

As the sun gently wakes the buildings from their nightly slumber, they open their glassy eyes wide to reveal the memories of last night’s dreams of open skies and limitless possibility.

I have been waiting to hear back regarding something really, really big that I found out about last week after having a lengthy Skype meeting with someone thousands of miles away from me. This is the sort of something that I don’t think I have wished so much for in my whole life and something I really hope will happen. The anticipation of finding out has been intense and I can only hope that it pans out. Believe me, if it does, I will post about it everywhere!

Glass skyscraper reflecting a beautiful blue sky and clouds. Tribeca,New York City.

For all my complaints about glass buildings rising in the place of other more ornate and classic works of architecture, I will say that if you find yourself looking up at the newer glass buildings on a beautiful day, the views are beautiful. Blue skies and clouds pour onto the glass like a liquid dream emulsion.

The Vanderbilt Gate at the entrance of the Conservatory Garden. Central Park, New York City.

As one of Central Park’s only formal gardens, the Conservatory Garden contains a number of fountains and historic architectural marvels that allow visitors to capture a glimpse into New York City’s opulent Gilded Age. Many structures in New York City originated with the wealthy industrialists and financiers of this particular time period such as the Astors, Vanderbilts, Carnegies and Morgans to name a few.

This gate is located at the entrance to the Conservatory Garden on 5th Avenue. Called the Vanderbilt Gate, it dates back to 1894. The wrought iron gate with cast iron and repoussé details was designed by an American architect named George B. Post. It was executed in a foundry in Paris specifically for use as the forecourt gate to Cornelius Vanderbilt II’s chateau, one of the grandest and most decadent of the residences in New York City during the Gilded Age. The chateau which was located at Fifth Avenue and 58th Street was demolished to make way for the Bergdorf Goodman department store. The gate was preserved and donated to New York City 1939 by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney and was restored to its former glory in 1996.

Sunset over skyscrapers. Midtown, New York City.

After weeks of very temperamental hot weather here in New York City, today was uncharacteristically beautiful. In addition to the cooler temperatures, the sun made a dramatic withdrawal from the sky leaving behind beautiful purple and orange hues in its wake.

This particular view is looking out over Bryant Park and the New York Public Library at the various skyscrapers that line the park. When the sun descends, the street lights pop on and many skyscrapers cast their glow onto the streets below. It’s one of my favorite times of day.

The skyscraper on the far right is the second tallest building in New York City. Designed by Cook+Fox Architects, it is one of the most efficient and ecologically friendly buildings in the world (so far). “The design of the building makes it environmentally friendly, using technologies such as floor-to-ceiling insulating glass to contain heat and maximize natural light, and an automatic daylight dimming system. The tower also features a greywater system, which captures rainwater for reuse. Bank of America states that the building is made largely of recycled and recyclable materials. Air entering the building is filtered, as is common, but the air exhausted is cleaned as well.” Source
