Early Sunday morning on Orchard Street. Lower East Side. New York City.

On cold city mornings, birds pepper the bone-white sky with movement.

And through the haze left over by clouds caught in the scuffle between autumn and winter, the wind rushes through the streets like the ghosts of yesterday’s thoughts.

4 Park Avenue and the Empire State Building towering over birds in flight. Midtown, New York City.

There is a majestic quality that 4 Park Avenue possesses which draws me in every time I pass it in my travels. Built in 1913, the building used to be the home of the famous Vanderbilt Hotel and among its famous residents throughout the years was opera singer Enrico Caruso who lived in the building in the 1920s.

Commissioned by the great grandson of railroad magnate Cornelius Vanderbilt, the hotel was erected in 1912 primarily for wealthy permanent residents looking to occupy space in a building with many amenities. It was designed by the co-designers of Grand Central Terminal, Warren & Whetmore. The Vanderbilts sold the building in 1925 and in 1967 the hotel was converted to apartments and offices.

The height of the buildings get lost sometimes in photos but the birds in this photo really help to illustrate the magnitude of the skyscrapers in this particular area of midtown near the Empire State Building.

The Empire State Building and 4 Park Avenue. Midtown, Manhattan.

In keeping with the skyscraper theme today, here is a recent photo of the Empire State Building with 4 Park Avenue in the foreground. I love that the birds made it into this particular shot.

4 Park Avenue is one of my favorite New York City buildings. 4 Park Avenue was built in 1913 and used to be the famous Vanderbilt Hotel. I have a penchant for loving buildings with skyway bridges which are pedestrian bridges that connect towers or buildings to each other.
