Buildings along Broadway. Soho, New York City.

In a city of roughly 8 million people, every window is the portal to a fascinating story. When I was younger, I used to play a game where I would look at different windows and try to imagine who inhabited those particular spaces. I created vivid stories about the imagined inhabitants.

Who am I kidding? I still do this.

The High Line. West Village, New York City.

The High Line has definitely grown into one of my favorite public spaces on the West side of Manhattan. I love that flowers and wildlife have been successfully merged with old railroad tracks. The views are absolutely breath taking.

“The High Line is a 1.45-mile New York City park built on a section of the former elevated freight railroad spur called the West Side Line, which runs along the lower west side of Manhattan; it has been redesigned and planted as an aerial greenway. The High Line Park currently runs from Gansevoort Street, one block below West 12th Street, in the Meatpacking District, up to 20th Street, and will eventually run through the neighborhood of Chelsea to the West Side Yard, near the Javits Convention Center.” Source

Washington Mews. Greenwich Village, New York City.

This particular street has always had the feel of a street straight out of an older European city. It turns out that it has an interesting history. Until I looked into its history recently, I had no idea that Edward Hopper died there.

“Washington Mews is a private gated street in New York City between 5th Avenue and University Place just north of Washington Square Park. It was originally a mews (row of stables) that serviced horses from homes in the area. Since the 1950s the former stables have served as housing, offices and other facilities for New York University.

Washington Mews is on land that in the 18th century was part of a large farm owned by Capt. Robert Richard Randall; upon Randall’s death, he bequeathed the land to what became known as Sailors’ Snug Harbor. In 1881, New York City’s Department of Public Works ordered the construction of Washington Mews first gates at each end, in an apparent attempt to distinguish the Mews from public streets. In 1916, Sailors’ Snug Harbor had a dozen of the stables remodeled into artist studios, designed by Maynicke & Franke; during the 20th century, artists living there included Paul Manship, Gertrude Vanderbilt, and, later, Edward Hopper (who died there).”- Source

The Empire State Building. Midtown, New York City.

One of my favorite views of Midtown is actually from my own neighborhood, the Lower East Side. I love the variety of buildings that frame the Empire State Building from this particular perspective. The Spring trees are a nice touch too! :)

Midtown, New York City.

This is one of my favorite distant views of the General Electric skyscraper.

The General Electric Building, also known as 570 Lexington Avenue, is a historic 50-floor, 640 feet (195 m)-tall, skyscraper in Midtown Manhattan, New York City, United States, at the southwest corner of Lexington Avenue and 51st Street). Originally known as the RCA Victor Building when designed in 1931 by John W. Cross of Cross and Cross, and sometimes known by its address to avoid confusion with the later GE Building at 30 Rockefeller Plaza. The building was deeded by RCA to GE before construction was completed.Source.

Midtown, New York City.

After a very long and bitter Winter here in New York City, it’s nice to see strong sunlight again especially when it illuminates the skyscrapers of Midtown, Manhattan.
