New York City at Night in the Winter - Lower East Side

—-

The first draft of my New York City photography book is due a week from today. I have been immersed in the grueling process of not only finalizing the writing for the book but also picking the images that will ultimately go into the book. It’s been an interesting process since I have been sorting through images dating all the way back to the end of 2010 when I first started seriously pursuing photography.

This photograph was taken with my iPhone during the winter of 2012. This is a portion of the same part of Rivington Street that I photographed and published online in my last post to this blog. It’s interesting how two totally different nights produced two entirely different images of (roughly) the same location.

I remember that I took this photograph when I was at a turning point in terms of understanding where I wanted to go with my photography. When I look at this scene, I can feel the cathartic rush of emotions that washed over me while I stood on that street corner. It was so freeing to finally come to terms with my goal of pursing the loose quality of melding a host of influences and emotions into an image rather than capturing the sharp quality of reality .

And with that, I return to the cocoon of book creation where hopefully I will emerge in a week with a first draft that my editing team will enjoy sculpting into a finished product. :)
