New York City sunset - Newtown Creek - Greenpoint, Brooklyn

Those were the sunsets:

the ones where the city

melted away

into a pool of gold.

And we ran

hand in hand

along the waterfront

with summer

whispering in our ears

as we smiled

until our faces hurt.

Those were the sunsets.

This is a view of the New York City skyline as seen from the border of Brooklyn and Queens. I took this with the Sony NEX-7 last weekend during a rather epic journey in Brooklyn. To be fair, I was completely lost when I came across this view as I had walked in the opposite direction of where I intended to go. But it turned out to be a serendipitous experience since the sun had just begun its descent as I discovered this rather peculiar but beautiful spot.

The foreground location is Newtown Creek which is a 3 mile estuary that runs between Brooklyn and Queens. It’s also one of the most polluted industrial sites in America. During the mid nineteenth century it was a major industrial waterway. Over time, over 30 million gallons (US) of oil and sewage from New York City’s sewer system have made their way into this body of water. With such a sordid and sullied history, Newtown Creek has the distinction of being one of the most polluted industrial sites in America.
