Dreams, schemes and eye-gleams…
This is a post all about dreams: more specifically the realization of dreams. It’s an all encompassing subject that has been brewing in my mind for the past few days.
It all started when Trey Ratcliff made a post about Schemer last week. Schemer is a new site by Google that allows users to make lists of schemes. It’s a way to discover lifelong interests, everyday activities and view recommendations of things to do by other users that just may appeal to you.
I have always been list-phobic. I have often gone out of my way to not make lists out of a mix of fear of committing to a set path and/or limiting myself in any way, shape or form. And so I found myself with an invite to try out Schemer and I skeptically decided to try it out.
Within hours of my initial invite, I found myself writing out schemes and dreams that had been percolating in my mind for ages but that I had never even spoken about to other people. The satisfaction of seeing these aspirations listed in one place is satisfying in a way I can’t quite describe other than to say that it’s a bit like peering into a crystal ball of wishes. I am sure that the lovely people at Google who designed Schemer intend(ed) it to be a place for local and international activities on a small scale but it appears that I am not alone in using Schemer as a place to put life wishes.
A strange thing happened in the process of authoring schemes. It was as if the process of putting wishes into concise statements turned them into distinct possibilities: dreams imbued with the breath of life. What an exhilarating realization! And so, I have been putting what I like to call my “dreams, schemes and eye-gleams” on Schemer to imbue them with a life of their own.
I decided to put some of my larger aspirations in this post (in addition to where they reside for all to see on Schemer, of course) so I can come back to them here to inspire me to work to achieve some of these “dreams, schemes and eye-gleams”. If you are on Schemer, you can find my profile here: Vivienne Gucwa on Schemer. If you are not on Schemer, there are many invites floating around on the internet currently. I can’t speak highly enough about it (as you can see!).
Some of my grander aspirations:
"Find something you are passionate about that gives meaning to your life" which goes hand in hand with a few other schemes I put out there including: "Not settle for anything less than the best in this life"- Prior to going back to university a few years ago, I was in a place in my life where I felt limited and stilted as if all of my aspirations were squelched by a thousand negative outside forces.
When I started delving into photography and putting my work online back in 2010, it was as if photography had the ability to open up all of the doors that were shut for me previously and pummel the negative forces that made me feel limited and stilted. I have never felt so much passion for anything. The process of taking and sharing photos is something that causes the rest of the world to dissolve around me when I am in the process of doing those things and most importantly it makes me feel at one with myself. I don’t take that feeling for granted and I hope I never will. In fact, I wish everyone could find something in this life that gives them that feeling of passionate unadulterated bliss.
"Travel the world with my camera" which coincides with many other Schemes like: "Take a photograph in the center of every major city on earth", "Visit every continent and swim in every ocean" and "Live life like it is the ultimate adventure" - To be able to travel and document my experiences via photography and writing has been something I visualize every night before I go to sleep. This dream gets me through the hard times in my life. All of the self-doubt I carry around with me like an anchor lightens when I imagine what I could achieve by traveling the world. I can practically feel the grand possibility of it all in my bones.
"Meet interesting people from Google Plus" - This is actually something I already achieved but I think it’s an ongoing scheme, for sure. Google Plus has opened up so many doors for me in regards to meeting other photographers, writers, artists and all-around inspiring people. It’s almost hard to envision what my online life was like prior to Google Plus! Google Plus has one of the most nurturing creative communities I have ever had the pleasure to be a part of.
One of the ways I have met people is through organized photowalks in New York City. As a primarily solitary photographer who feels the most comfortable shooting alone, I was initially skeptical about the idea of meeting up with other photographers and going on photowalks but I can definitely say that the Google Plus New York City Photowalks I have gone on have been extremely inspiring and fun.
"Go on a Google + Photowalk in Space" - I actually didn’t author this scheme. It was already on Schemer and its tags include Lotus Carroll and Ron Garan. Ron Garan is a NASA astronaut who started using Google Plus in Space aboard the International Space Station. He has taken some of the most incredible photos of the Earth from space. How incredible would it be to go on a Google Plus Photowalk in Space? Seriously! Ok, so this scheme seems a little far-reaching but I am willing to bet that at some point, photographing the Earth from Space will become the ‘thing to do’. Trust me :).
"Live passionately, love deeply and inspire others to do the same" - I strongly believe that you get back what you give. To be able to inspire and see other people live their lives truly following their passions and experiencing love along the way would be a gift. Life is so fleeting and yet it’s full of possibility, hope and promise which makes it beautiful in a grandiose way. I hope to never forget this about life and to always aspire to live my life passionately and to love deeply.
I wrote a comment on one of the schemes I authored that hasn’t left my mind since I put it on Schemer. The comment was:
"I like to put my dreams out to the world in the hope that having my dreams take flight will somehow propel them to great heights… I like to believe that anything is possible in this life. So, here is to putting my dream out there and giving all of them wings to soar up to the realm of possibility."
I really encourage everyone to put their dreams out there whether it be via Schemer or via some other method.
Here is to each and every one of our dreams taking flight and soaring up to the realm of possibility…
